Jaziya, Rape, Torture and Murder: A report on the escalating state-backed terror campaign against Hindus in Bangladesh since January 2025

several mass murders orchestrated and executed by
Islamists since the pre-Independence period. Some examples include :
a) The
Anti-Hindu pogroms of 1949 : At least 5,00,0000 Hindus were murdered and over
45,00,000 Hindu men, women and children were displaced from their motherland .
b) Around
10,000 Hindus had lost their lives and at least 3,00,000 Hindus were forcibly
displaced during the pogroms of 1964.
c) Anywhere
between 3,00,000 to 30,00,000 Hindus were killed (25,00,000 is the most commonly
quoted estimate), 60,00,000 to 70,00,000 were forced to leave their ancestral
and spiritual homeland and 2,00,000 to 4,00,000 Hindu women and girls were
raped during the systematic campaign of mass-murder and genocidal sexual
violence in 1971.
d) The
“post-election violence” in 2001:The Bangladesh High-Court had ordered a
judicial investigation on this so-called “electoral violence” in 2009. During
their two –year long investigation, they found evidence of targeted violence
against Hindus by at least 26,352 people, including 25 Ministers and Members of
Parliaments of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Jamaat-e-Islami led
alliance Government. They concluded that at least 18,000 women and girls were raped.
Their report was rejected by the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
Journalists from US and UK news outlets have reported that Hindus were cleansed
from several villages like Srirampur near Khulna, through“systematic ethnic
cleansing” .
e) Hindus
celebrating DurgaPuja were targeted by Islsmists during Durga Puja in 2021,
after Iqbal Hossain had placed a Quran in the lap of the Hindu god Hanuman Ji.
At least 343 temples were looted, rganized and desecrated. 1650 properties
belonging to Hindus were looted, rganized and burnt down in many cases. At
least 14 Hindus were murdered and 17 Hindus went “missing” between 13.10.2021
and 19.10.2021. Numerous Hindu individuals were arrested for attempting to
share information about the ongoing violence in social media.
Sabyasachi Ghosh Dastidar, the author of the book “
Bengal’s Hindu Holocaust : The Partition of India and its Aftermath” uses
official Government records and over 25 years of extensive fieldwork to arrive
at the following conclusions :
1) By conservative estimates, at least 30 lakh (3
million) native Hindus were murdered and over 4.9 crore (49 million) Hindu men,
women and children had simply disappeared between 1947 and 2001.
2) The state has rganizedd the persecution of Hindus
by suppressing demands for basic civil rights, pursuing policies that appease
and empower Islamists and maintaining and enforcing a legal framework that
discriminates against Hindus and other minorities. Legislations like theVested
Property Act (which allowed the Government and Islamists to confiscate the
properties of Hindus who had either gone “missing” or were driven out of
Bangladesh) were framed for rewarding Islamists who drove out Hindus from their
lands. The helpless Hindu community is left with the question “Aamagolokerargkothaay?”
(Where are our people ? Where do they go?).
According to Bangladeshi economist and professor
AbulBarkat, implementation of this Enemy Property Act or Vested Property Act
between 1965 and 2006 has directly impacted at least 60,00,000 Hindus. Hindus
have lost over 26,00,000 acres of land due to this Act .
The legal rganizeddn
of any real or perceived criticism ordefamation of Islam, the prophet Muhammad
and the Quran in the constitution and the Penal Code has frequently been used
to justify attacks against Hindus. Hundreds of Hindus have either been lynched
or arrested under fabricated charges of blasphemy. Islamists often incite Hindu
youth with repeated attacks on their culture and religion, attempting to draw
out responses which can be perceived as blasphemy. The Digital Security Act of
2018criminalises the publishing of any content perceived to be blasphemous.
Activists have criticized the use of this Act to disproportionately arrest and
prosecute Hindus for hurting the religious sentiments of Muslims.
3) The authorities have remained in a complete state
of denial that a systematic persecution of Hindus is a daily affair in
Bangladesh since the pre-Independence period.
Tathagata Roy, author and former Governor of Meghalaya
and Tripura, agrees with the research of Sachi Ghosh Dastidar in his book “ Ja
ChiloAamaarDesh” citing numerous examples of the state participating in and
helping to cover up crimes and atrocities against Hindus, including
mass-murders and large-scale rapes of women. The existing research proves that
Islamists committing atrocities against Hindus have enjoyed uninterrupted state
support from at least the 1940s.
Indigenous
Hindu minorities face violence, humiliation and discrimination throughout their
life in Bangladesh. Slurs like “ Malaun” (cursed by Allah), “Kafir” and “Agents
of India” are hurled at them almost daily. The large-scale attacks on the
lives, livelihood and dignity of Hindus are not mere “tragedies” or “incidents”,
but part of a genocidal campaign to kill, convert or drive out the remaining
Hindu population of Bangladesh. According to Government statistics, 1.25 crore Hindus
were forced to leave East Pakistan between 1950 and 1971. Around 1.5 crore
Hindus were forced to leave their motherland between 1974 and 2016, proving
that the campaign to cleanse Hindus in Bangladesh was not something perpetrated
by the Pakistanis only.
At least 3,679
attacks on Hindus were orchestrated in 2013. 559 houses and 442 business
establishments belonging to Hindus were burnt down or rganized and 1678
religious institutions were attacked. 761 houses, 193 business establishments
and 247 temples were attacked in 2014. 6474 attacks on Hindus were documented
by the Bangladesh Jatiya Hindu Mahajotein 2017. At least 25 Hindu girls and
children were raped that year [11]. The atrocities on Hindusincreased in 2020,
with the Bangladesh Jatiya Hindu Mahajote documenting the following atrocities:

The islamist lobby in Bangladesh acts as a pressure
group and every single political party have accepted the majority of their
demands.The success of the so-called “ student protests against
discrimination” was used as an excuse to label Hindus as “ Agents of Awami
League” to justify large-scale attacks on their lives and livelihood. Journalists
and researchers have concluded that there is a sharp increase in violence and
other atrocities like rape, extracting Jaziya, public humiliation, forced
conversion, arrest and torture under fabricated charges, dismissal from
Government jobs and blacklisting from employment and business opportunities
against the remaining 1.3 crore indigenous Hindus, after the fall of the Awami
League Government on 05.08.2024. The premier Bangladeshi media outlet
“ProthomAlo” had recorded 1068 instances of attacks against Hindu houses and
businesses during August 2024 [13]. A report from the “Hindu-Buddhist-Christian
Unity Council” has documented 2010 instances of violence, arson, loot,
kidnapping, murder, rape, gang-rape and attacks on Hindu temples and
crematoriums between 04/08/2024 and 20/08/2024.
Decline of Hindu population in Bangladesh
Nature of Violence against Hindus
since August 2024
Large-scale attacks were launched against minority
Hindus, targeting their lives, livelihood and places of worship during August,
2024.Sizeable mobs armed with local weapons targeted Hindu localities and isolated
Hindusettlements. The tried-and-tested method of mob-violence, with each attack
lasting anywhere between 30 mins and 3 hours, was rganize by the Islamist
aggressors.
Over 50 Hindu educators were forced to resign from
their jobs without a proper investigation to verify the truth of the allegations
labelled against them [14]. At least 91 Hindu police personnel were dismissed
on highly suspicious charges between 05.08.2024 and 27.10.2024 [15]. A
coordinated effort is being made by Islamists and the unelected interim
Government of Bangladesh to prevent Hindus from rganize state power to protect
themselves or demand justice.
The scale and consistency of reporting atrocities against Hindus by the Bangladeshi media is extremely limited compared to the volume of incidents reported by minority rights groups. Journalists like Emon Chowdhury of Ekhon TV were dismissed for reporting atrocities like gang-rape against Hindus in Pirojpur [16]. Such lack of coverage or distortion of facts ( Ekattor TV hadedited the image of the mother of minor rape victim Anika Roy in March, 2025 to hide their Hindu identity in March, 2025 [17] ) cannot be justified as self-censorship to ensure communal harmony and national rganizedd. Islamist groups have launched multiple attacks against the two leading newspapers of Bangladesh, “ProthomAlo” and “The Daily Star” during October and November, claiming that these media outlets were “anti-Islam” and “pro-India”[18][19][20].Islamist groups like “Jamaat-e-Islami” and “Hefajot-e-Islam” are organisingand funding several campaigns designed to encourage violence, rape and other atrocities against the minority Hindus since at least December, 2024. The atrocities against Hindus in 2025 can be explained better using a RULLS (Random Unceasing Low-Level Scattered) model. Images of two of the handbills circulated throughout Bangladesh are given below. These handbill contain several verifiably fake information to term Hindus as “rapists”, “necrophiles” and “child traffickers”. These handbills emphasize the need muslim girls to stay away from male Hindu youth only, claiming to spread awareness against the so-called “Bhagwa Love Trap”. It has become much easier for Islamists and biased or compromised media outlets to explain random attacks as mere “law and order issue” or “isolated incidents”.

Conclusion
The atrocities
against Hindus have not reduced with time. Nor has the severity of the crimes
reduced. Urgent action is needed from the International Community to ensure the
survival of the remaining 1.3 crore indigenous Hindus of Bangladesh. Islamists
and their extremist ideology have emerged as an existential threat to native
Bengali culture. The atrocities against Hindus should not be regarded as a mere
act as conquest or invasion but as a coordinated attempt to wipe out the native
sons and daughters of the soil along with every recognisable trace of their
culture, customs and traditions.
